Tourette’s! It’s hilarious isn’t it? Electric Spectre have it and love it, but for those of you who don’t find screaming ‘Guntmuncher’ at a 64 yar old lady in church refreshing, science can help! According to the BMC science journal, magnetic imaging of sufferers shows unusual behaviour in the frontostriatal lobes, meaning a drug can now be constructed to control these areas and cut out the potty-mouthing.

And of course, a drug that can be used to shut down or light up targeted areas of the frontal lobes would have NO OTHER USE WHATSOEVER, our overlord informs us.

Stand By For Mind Control!

Another week, another crazy DARPA-based story on ES, this time relating to the holy grail of military industrialist govrments everywhere- Mind Control!

The latest from our favourite mad science mavericks is known as Reorganization and Plasticity to Accelerate Injury Recovery (REPAIR), and is actually being billed as ‘mind repair’, basically amounting to attempts to harness the power of the mind- what the boys in the lab bill as “Understanding how nueral-based sensory stimulation can accelerate recovery from brain injury.”

Sounds good doesn’t it? Until you realise that it involves building a complex nueral model (That’ll be A.I to you and me)and sticking it in a simulated environment (That’ll be The Matrix). Once this is done, it’s a short step to plugging in actual brains. And ’stimulating’ them to produce responses – any response you want in fact.

So- an advanced military think-tank, with the ability to make you think and do whatever it wants (and a living computer adding extra spice to the whole thing) is coming soon. Unless of course…they’ve already done it. Follow the white rabbit…

Mind Over Metal

Remember the Headmasters? They were one of the early spin-offs that eventually spelled death, then obscurity, then animalizers-or-whatever-they’re-called for the once mighty Transformers. Now however, it seems that the technology to upgrade robots using human thought is here from an unlikely source: Honda.

You’ve all seen their Asimo robot wandering up and down and bumping into things, and while sophisticated, generally making Honda’s dream of human-beating football squadroids looking pretty far fetched. Now however, it seems our Nipponese friends have found a way round this-electroencephalography. That’s a mind readin’ robo dude to you folks.

Wired up like this Asimo imitates the thoughts of his controller in real time, meaning if they toughen the little guy up a little he’d be great for mining, rescue, and the ever popular taking on Robocop in a fistfight. Also, look at the picture above. Now look at that guy’s helmet. Now imagine it parked in orbit above Alderaan. That can’t be good can it?

Pick A Thought…Any Thought…

After watching Scanners one too many times, I’m sure I’m not the only one who worries that the Government may well be trying to read my thoughts on a regular basis, but it seems such concerns may be ill-founded, because today saw US scientists finally crack mind reading! Yep, mind reading, apparently with 80% accuracy-terrified yet?

Fortunately no need for that tinfoil hat just yet, as the MRI scanner technology can (at the moment) only work out which shape you are thinking of. So, the most advanced mind-reading technology ever developed, and it’s just about ready to open a small comedy club.

Reports that the mark II model will also produce rabbits from hats remain unconfirmed.
