Music of the Night

appleconferenceTonight looks like a big night for music gadgets and gizmos with Sony and Apple hosting press conferences ushering in new services and devices. Sony are in Germany for the IFA in Berlin, Europes biggest technology show. The Financial Times reports that Sony will be debuting a music subscription service, which will also offer up films and tv shows that is accessed with PlayStation Network accounts- a Spotify style service that covers everything?

Apple are expected to show off new iPod Nano’s complete with touchscreens and we may even finally find out if the company will finally get round to offer a cloud based music streaming service. Aplle should also be showing off their revamped Apple TV, though Amazon have tried to steal their thunder by announcing their own online TV service in the same week that has saw a tremendous first week for their new Kindle device.

Good to see competition between the big companies as this can only lead to bigger and better services for us lot – the consumers. Sony does face an uphill struggle due to having terrible software in the past for music management, but their revamped PlayStation Store went down well with gamers so hopefully lessons have been learned. Apple will be streaming their conference live tonight with a big catch – it is only available to view on Apple devices. Not making this up!

Wanted: Lost iPhone

Ever had a heavy night at the pub and came home to realise you have lost your phone. Not a great feeling. Now imagine you work for Apple and the phone you have lost is not due out for another four-six months. And the person who found it sold it to a technology blog. Oh dear.

Newsgush: Bill Gates joins Twitter

Microsoft, I remember when you used to be cool.

Well, not cool, but evil at least! With your big, lumbering, expensive, horrible products and your total disdain for the average Joe who just wants to set up his wireless internet. But never mind all that. Now we’ve learned via Pocketlint that Bill Gates, figurehead of Microsoft despite being several years retired – is on Twitter and making himself (and by extension Microsoft) look all cuddly and approachable.

Boo! I don’t like friendly Microsoft, I miss evil, seven-billion-pounds-for-the-student-edition Microsoft! No wonder Google have taken over as Apple’s main competitor. If this keeps up it wont be long before they ‘do a Sega’ and drop out of the race entirely. they’ll probably choose to ‘focus exclusively on their touchscreen dinner-table division’ or somesuch.

Sorry, this has turned into a bit of a rant about how Microsoft are less powerful and evil than I wish they were. What this says about me I’m not sure, but anyway – you can follow Captain Gates himself at twitter.com/billgates
