You have the Come Dine With Me book and CD, why not grab the app? You plan your own party, send invites, select your menu from a hundred recipes, post scores on Facebook and listen to Dave Lamb quotes.  The app is available now from the iTunes store for £1.79 which doesn’t seem bad for a hundred recipes. All the user reviews seem to be obsessed with Dave Lamb quotes though. If you do get invited to a dinner party and your host starts guffawing while playing sarcastic quips down your eyes you do have permission to show them the back of your hand.

Android phones are lovely, however they do suffer a major flaw when compared to their iPhone counterparts – the lack of a well organised App store. There is no real quality control for Android apps meaning everyone can make what they want and stick it up to download, making navigation a nightmare. Click ‘latest apps’ and in most categories you are likely to be confronted with a horde of of applications featuring young well endowed Asian women. There is no official desktop client like iTunes, meaning you have to use a third party service, luckily appbrain is brilliant, to get decent navigation and good reviews of apps. A lot of reviews for paid apps on the Android Market are spam comments advertising pirate app sites. To get the best advice on what apps are worth your time you often have to rely on forum recommendations – not a great way to get the mass market interested. There also seems to be a problem between the app market, Google and phone manufacturers as some apps don’t appear to be available on certain models though the developer says it is compatible. Very messy. The uselessness of the Android Market was compounded this past weekend with the release of Angry Birds.

The game hit early on Friday for free download, but not on the Android Market due to people having problems downloading from there during the initial Beta. Instead the developers released it on a third party website – GetJar – which crumbled under demand. Hardcore fans set up download mirrors and 24 hours it was released onto the Market, but several phones could not access the download, even though the game runs fine on the device. My HTC Legend is listed as being compatible on the GetJar site but there is no sign of the birdies on the official Android Market when I visit on my handset and this is not the first time this has happened with my phone. For ages there was a problem with all camera apps as the Market thought my phone had no camera.

Many developers are also upset over the refund policy on the Android Market. When you purchase an app you get 24 hours to evaluate. If you decide you don’t like the app within those 24 hours, you get a full refund. Not bad when you download a crummy app, but not good for developers who may have made a six hour game, or a guide/map that someone might get use out of, then delete and get their money back.

The Android Market needs an overhaul, and oddly it looks like Amazon might be the ones to do it. They are supposedly opening up an Android storefront, and developers will need to pay $100 to feature on the store and apps will need to go through Quality Control before being available – no doubt stopping the influx of the aforementioned chesty Asians. Many criticise Apple for being heavy handed with their store, but a quick visit to the Android Market shows that perhaps too much choice and freedom has it’s downsides.

Final Fantasy fans were left hanging over the Bank Holiday with the announcement that the Final Fantasy XIV PC Beta was postponed, with no new date announced. The good news is that the launch niggles have been sorted and the Beta will begin tomorrow, Thursday the 2nd of September, at 2am. NO SLEEPS FOR YOU TONIGHT. To get registration codes get yourself set up at http://entry.ffxiv.com. Would love to see you there but my laptop would probably have steam bellowing out trying to run it!

If you have never seen an episode of Lost, but quite fancy watching it now it has finally finished you should scoot along to the Prince Charles Cinema in London on Monday 12th Spetember for a special screening of every episode. Fancy spending 80 hours in the cinema? I went to a Bourne film marathon one night and after three films in quick succession I was ready to go mad so I can’t wait to see the faces of people after this one. The screening starts on the same day that the complete collections of Lost are released on Blu-Ray and DVD – so if you want to watch at more sane pace you can. The Lost Marathon will commence at 10am on Monday 13th September 2010 and will continue constantly over 24-hour periods.  If successfully completed, the final episode will air on the afternoon of Thursday 16th September 2010. There will be regulated breaks and helpfully paramedics on the scene incase it all goes a bit wrong.

Those Angry Birds have got people addicted to taking out pigs on the iPhone and iPad but that’s not enough for our feathered fiends as they are also heading to PS3/PSP, the local toy shop and possibly the cinema! The game has sold over 6 million copies on the iPhone and iPad – an amazing amount and mostly down to incredible word of mouth, attracting many people who don’t usually play games to take an interest and have a go on their phone. Now publisher Chillingo have confirmed the game will be released as a ‘Mini’ for the PS3/PSP, one download from the PlayStation Store that is playable on both platforms – bargaintastic.

Developer Rovio have also been in talks to licence the game to Hollywood and toy companies to fully cash in on the popularity of the game, however a potential stumbling block is that a film would take between 2-3 years to be released, and the game could be long forgotten in that time. Would you see an Angry Birds film, or is there another title on the app store that you would like to have some spin-offs?
