An Interesting Way To Combat Piracy

UbiSoft have attracted criticism in the past for the way they handle DRM on their PC titles, but they should get awards for what they have done on the DS. The publisher recently released The Michael Jackson Experience for DS, and a clever piece of coding detects if the game is being run off a flash card and the copy protection kicks in – blaring vuvulzeulas over the top of the soundtrack. It follows in the footsteps of similar protection that was used on the PC version of Batman: Arkham Asylum in which the game was playable till a point then Batman’s cape was unable to glide leading to instant death – and lots of people going to the official Q&A forum for advice only to be found out as pirates.

Tourist Bra

JapanTouristBra

How would you attract tourists to your country – perhaps a big festival, or a lovely museum. Well the Japanese are putting their faith in bras – talking bras. The bra, made by Triumph, is based on a tour guides uniform says “Welcome to Japan” in a variety of languages when pressed. Not making any of this up. There is also space for some delightful photos of Japanese landmarks. C’mon Weymouth, your turn next.

3D Without Glasses

3dnoglasses

Toshiba are releasing two 3D TV’s in December – and you won’t need an overpriced pair of glasses to watch pointy bits come out of the screen. Hurrah! However they are rather smaller, coming in at 12 and 20 inches and will initially only be out in Japan but it’s a good step forward to push 3D TV into the mainstream (though do we really want it?). The major advantage of these TV’s is that you can have a bunch of friends round to enjoy some 3D action without shelling out ridiculous amounts for glasses. Imagine inviting a couple of  people over to watch football and you only have two pairs – do you shell out another £100 for another pair or let them sit watching a blurry mess. With these new TV’s you just need to crowd round the dinky screen. Will this craze die out soon? I’ve not been a huge fan of 3D movies at the cinema, but could see 3D being rather nifty and useful for games. Still, with most people still playing on SD TV’s 3D has a big battle to be dominant in living rooms.
