Yeah… Red Dead Redemption is pretty much going to be the best game ever

These were my gripes with GTA4:

  • Open world not big enough. Certainly no room to get any speed up or really coast around enjoying the scenery.
  • Open world not colourful. Boo!
  • Open world highly atmospheric, but it was the atmosphere of sweaty, rainy, rat-infested Liberty City.

Read Dead Redemption is GTA4 in the Wild West. Just take a look at that gameplay vid, and you can tell it already oozes quality. It’s beautiful, smooth, and it looks like the amazing euphoria engine is present and correct. It has horses. It has cacti. It has the first ever morality system in a game I’m actually looking forward to. (Obviously I will be an evil, ruthless, mercenary)

My sole annoyance is that the special slow-mo shooting system is directly and shamelessly pinched from Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, the soon-to-be second-best western series ever committed to console. I only hope that the inevitable success of this game can propel the Juarez games into the limelight they deserve.

Oh, and you can shoot bears.

(The third-best western series is Lucky Luke on the gameboy.)

Newsgush: Poetry in (perpetual) motion – the mythological machine is here.

A team of researchers at Steorn in Dublin have constructed what appears to be a machine that produces more power than it takes to drive. It’s the stuff of physicists craziest, conservation-energy-defyingest dreams. If you’re even halfway geeky, this is going to excite you.

You can watch the video of the thing in action – it’s being demo’d right now, and you can view a live stream of it running if you’re quick enough. The video is going to do a better job of explaining the science than I could, even though it’s not exactly a high-tech set-up they’re running. If that little motor is still spinning in a weeks time, we have ample reason to be excited.

The apparent explanation is a magnetic anomaly – quite mysterious, and it would be great to see some actual stats behind what’s going on inside that machine, but we’re just going to have to wait.

Pretty neat though.

Demoman gets a sword and shield. Because Valve are ace.

What do explosives experts require? Swords. What else? Shields. Duh. Okay it doesn’t make much sense, apart from the fact that the demoman (or Tavish DeGroot as we now know he’s called) is Scottish. Read More »

Dear Google: Please don’t let this be a countdown to you going evil. kthnxbai.

Oh dear. Google are up to something.

It’s probably some amazing new app or service that will make us all much happier and provide us with spiritual enrichment, but there’s always the chance that this is it: they’re finally going evil as we always suspected they would.

The buzz is all about this mysterious Easter Egg. Go to Google.com and hit ‘I’m feeling lucky’ with no search terms entered. Cue a mysterious countdown, that seems to be aimed at the new year…

But why?

Suggestions please.

EDIT: Apparently, if you change the clock on your computer you’ll change the countdown timer. Any brave readers with a few spare minutes fancy setting their clock to 2 minutes to New Years and seeing what happens when it ticks down to zero?

Arkham Asylum 2 teaser – Batman’s Back

But you’d be forgiven for not noticing he ever left. The Arkham Asylum excitement was only just dying down when this teaser trailer for the new game was released. It features a clearly unwell Joker, and many lunatics who are not in an asylum. Time will tell whether or not this game is set out in the streets of Gotham City, or whether the events of this trailer are merely a fractured nightmare taking place in Batman’s head. Whatever it is, the devs seems to be going with the popular ‘crumbly sequel’ aesthetic. (Which is quite an achievement considering that everything in the first game was falling apart anyway!)

We didn’t really get to confront all of Batman’s enemies in the first game – here’s hoping for some Two-Face, Penguin and Mad Hatter mayhem this time round. If there’s anything you really want to see in this next game, vent your fanboy excitement in the comments box!
