Oh dear. Google are up to something.

It’s probably some amazing new app or service that will make us all much happier and provide us with spiritual enrichment, but there’s always the chance that this is it: they’re finally going evil as we always suspected they would.

The buzz is all about this mysterious Easter Egg. Go to Google.com and hit ‘I’m feeling lucky’ with no search terms entered. Cue a mysterious countdown, that seems to be aimed at the new year…

But why?

Suggestions please.

EDIT: Apparently, if you change the clock on your computer you’ll change the countdown timer. Any brave readers with a few spare minutes fancy setting their clock to 2 minutes to New Years and seeing what happens when it ticks down to zero?

Unexplained Sky Spirals In Norway

wtf

So, some completely unexplained spiral formations have been spotted over Trøndelag and Finnmark in Northern Norway. No-one knows what they are. There have been no rocket launches in the area and meteorologists are baffled.

What’s your theory? New Tuguska Event? Interdimensional portal? Or swamp gas lit up Venus? Or, most horrifying – is it a viral marketing campaign for a sci fi movie?

Watch The Skies…If You Can Afford It…

LONDON

Aliens! If Hollywood is to be believed, the US Airforce is the only hope we’ll have against a full-on extra-terrestrial invasion, although in recent years the evidence (well..Independence Day…) shows that they’d be ably backed up by Her Majesty’s forces. Well, not any more baby.

Today saw the MoD shut down that most vital area of national defence-UFO investigations! According to a spokesman for the RAF:

“There is no defence benefit in such investigation and it would be an inappropriate use of defence resources.”

After a half-decade in which bug-eyed space beasts have resolutely refused to appear in the skies over London, the ministry will instead focus its budget on more oil rich/important issues like blowing up most of the middle east, presumable handing over space defence to the Green Lantern Corps.

Newsgush: Mininova go legit

MININOVA

Mininova.org, formerly the world’s (second) most popular source of bittorrent files has, today, closed its doors to the unruly world of illegal filesharing.

The news popped up on their blog, read the full post for all the info here, but it seems as if they have bowed to some kind of pressure from the Dutch Court of Utrecht, who deemed the site unlawful way back in August.

Mininova will still be running a content distribution service, but this effectively marks the end for it’s pirate-enabling swashbuckery.

Electric Spectre wishes to make clear that it never used the site, and never benefited from it’s easy-to-use interface and helpful community, and as such is not upset by this news and is in no way concerned with finding a site of equivalent quality in the future.
