BULLET HELL – Japanese-lolita shmup Death Smiles coming to the Xbox

Few gaming terms fill my heart with quite so much joy as ‘bullet hell.’ I can almost feel the sweat pricking my palms as I frantically nudge my guy/spaceship/lolita out the path of a stream of laser-fire whilst avoiding a corona of fireballs spiralling towards me from another direction. That’s why the news that Death Smiles, the frankly mental horizontal shmup is making the journey to western shores makes me very happy indeed.

The press release is titled: “DEATH SMILES AT EVERYONE. LOLIS SMILE BACK.”

THIS IS A GOOD START.

No word yet on whether this is a download-title or a full in-the-shops-drag-your-sorry-arse-to-HMV affair, my money’s on the former, and frankly I think it has a better chance of doing well as a download title. I’d buy it I will be buying it in any case.

Oh, one more piece of good news concerning this game. The bad guy’s name is… wait for it…

Imperator Tyrannosatan.

Any word of a release date, you’ll know as soon as we hear.

A How-To Video: Build your own Workfort

Let me set the scene that will be familiar to anyone who sometimes works from home: several days ago I was well and truly up against it. Deadlines were looming from every angle, and to compound matters, I was struggling to keep focused. I knew that hard work and concentration were the only things that would ensure all my work was done on time, and to a high standard. To do this it would be necessary to build a massive fort in my living room using all of my furniture. Read More »

Naughty Bear – Second trailer reveals yes, he is actually quite naughty

Cast your mind back a few days when we showed you the first trailer to 505 games’ upcoming 360/ps3 game Naughty Bear. Well, here we are with a second trailer, and it’s hard to deny this bear’s naughtiness. Trailer two shows our hero chasing down a wounded bear, shotgun in hand, and brutally finishing him/her off.

Apparently this game is aspiring to be a GTA-style open-world kinda thing. I expect we’ll have to wait a little while longer for any gameplay footage, but this is shaping up to have some promise.

Carbon copy the control scheme from GTA4 - no wait – Saints Row 2 (much better) and reskin the open-world from either game to feature delightful bears in picnic-land, then let the player loose with an arsenal of weapons and vehicles. Insta-hit.

Newsgush: Nintendo supersize the DSi – introducing the DSi XL

dsixl

If, like me, you’re always accidentally crushing your handhelds between your mighty fists, then this news will please you – Nintendo have announced the Dsi XL will go on sale on March 5th, 2010.

Two 4.2 inch screens, which are 93% bigger than the screen on the Nintendo DS Lite, really bring the adventure and action to life.

If you held back on buying a DSi this might be the time to upgrade, but if you’re more concerned about your portable gaming being, well, portable – then you might manage to cope without it.

The new console also comes pre-loaded with two Nintendo DSiWare software: Dr Kawashima’s: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition and Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function, as well as the Nintendo DSi Browser, which enables you to easily access the internet via a Wi-Fi connection.

More info is available on the Nintendo website.

Oh, and we’re not too keen on the colours – wine red and dark brown? Hm.

Google and giant robots: News Round-up

goog

Yesterday was a pretty slow news day. Nevermind, it happens, and we’ve already had so much news today (and it’s only 10.30) that this is going to be something of a round-up post.

First – Google’s Nexus One phone – the fabled iPhone-killer-makes-your-baby-handsome-cures-all-ills God-phone faces dissappointing first-week sales, if app analytics firm Flurry can be trusted. Only 20,000 units have been shifted – that’s 80 times fewer devices than the iPhone 3GS managed to peddle in its first week. To be fair, the phone was hyped into all oblivion, and when it turned out to be (shocker) just a phone, people were pretty disappointed.

In other Google news – the search engine super-giant have threatened to pull out of China, apparently in response to the hacking of human-rights activist’s email accounts. Drama! Google were criticised by some for even providing their service to China in the first place, but Google stated they did so in the name of a free internet, and greater access to information for China’s citizens. Thoughts on all this superpower-quibbling in the comments please.

Finally, and somewhat more light-heartedly - Activision are bringing Transformers: War for Cybertron to all consoles at some point this year. (would it kill these big publishers to at least take a stab at a release date?)

The game is set on Cybertron, before the transformers head to Earth. This is good because presumably it means zero humans interfering with the robot-action. Also, the Transformers themselves will be sporting a cartoony look more in keeping with the original cartoons, as opposed to the “Michael Bay-ified insect-like versions.”

Which is nice.
