Avoiding Spoilers

spoilers

Spoilers bring out the worst in people, whether it be kids rushing about the playground with the results of last nights Royal Rumble that you were looking forward to watch when you got home or people speaking too loud on the train about the episode of Lost they downloaded the previous evening. Heavy Rain is released at the end of the week on PS3 and already spoilers are popping up on the net about the identity of ‘The Origami Killer’, ruining the game for many players. Here are some tips to avoid spoilers for this game and others in the future.

  • Avoid watching any gameplay videos in the week of release: Now you might be quite excited about the game, and want to check out some gameplay footage to tide you over, but you can bet that spoilers are lurking in the comments below the video.
  • Stay clear of forums: People will no doubt accidentally post spoilers when discussing the game. Now you may think it is OK to visit a forum and avoid topics on the game in question. Wrong – on the week of release of Bioshock, a member paid for advertising banners that featured major plot-points. An example of the lengths some people go to spoil people’s fun.
  • Avoid signing in to Xbox Live/PSN/ Steam etc: Many gamers had spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4 sent to their PlayStation Network inbox, often the spoilers were in the message title.
  • Finish the story mode before embarking in multiplayer: You want to dip in for a bit of online action, but stay clear as it is all too easy to join the game with someone who is a bad loser and will reveal spoilers.

Some handy hints that should help out, and if you are very paranoid it is probably better to stay offline altogether in case spoilers come through email, Facebook or Twitter. In fact, I would go a step further and block up my letterbox but I am expecting the game to be delivered. Please don’t post me any spoilers via postcard.
