John Terry and Ashley Cole may be having a tough time from the press,  but they must be thankful that they do not have public profiles on Twitter.

Over the past few months we have seen many a celeb praising the micro blogging site, loving how they can communicate with the great unwashed. Some have experienced downsides. One user dared to call tweets from Internet baron Stephen Fry boring, and got a shedload of abuse from Fry fans. But the abuse that chap received was nothing in comparison with what is happening to serial sex texter and Family Fortunes host Vernon Kay.

Vernon was exposed in the press last week for texting a Page 3 girl behind the back of his wife, Tess Daly. In the past,us mere mortals could only contend with writings letter of disgust to the papers or teletext. A few years ago we could send emails to their work address, which would be filtered by other staff first. Now we can hand judgments direct to naughty celebrities directly through Twitter.

Heading to Vernon’s Twitter page doesn’t reveal much, but doing a search for messages sent to him reveals some brilliant prose from the British public. As can be seen below.

Would any of these people dare to say this to a celebrity in the street, or is this the case of the age old adage that sane normal people become noisy abusive trolls when they get anywhere near a computer. Another point to remember, is that many of these people are eligible to vote.

I don’t know about you, but I never ever thought that Vernon Kay had such a big profile with many people genuinely caring about him and his wife. It makes me genuinely worried about what would happen to the nation if Phillip Schofield was caught up in a scandal, or indeed would Twitter, and the world, survive if Ashton Kutcher was up to no good.

Lessons to be learned from this sorry saga
1. Don’t text Page 3 girls who can easily sell their story to their employer.
2. If scandal is brewing, lock down your Twitter account.
3. Don’t commit plagiarism with work from aspiring web savvy artists, but that is a story for another time!
