I apologise in advance for the lack of a good picture to accompany this story. The guys over at Weta (the SFX company responsible for Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia) have gone completely beyong their remit and, wait for it, created a mermaid’s tail for a double amputee in New Zealand.
Again, I’m sorry there is not as yet an awesome picture of this, our paparazzi boys are on it.
The woman in question, Nadya Vessey, lost her legs due to illness when she was a child. Then one day
a child asked her what happened to her legs and she told him she was a mermaid. The idea stuck with her, so she wrote to Weta Workshop in Wellington, New Zealand, two years ago asking for a mermaid tail. To her surprise, they said they’d do it.
Are all SFX people this philanthropic? Because I am thinking setting myself alight and calling Rob Bottin in to fix me up. Rob Bottin. He designed RoboCop, which gives me an excellent excuse for posting a picture of RoboCop.
