Well, It’s finally here.Next weekend we get to see a giant blue atomic nudist destroy the Vietcong (amongst other things) in glorious Technicolor. Probably the most anticipated film of the year, and if your particularly lucky, you can see it first courtesy of FutureCinema. An offshoot of the truly awesome SecretCinema, these guys take movie going and turn it into a …well…cinematic event. This one’s sold out, but check out the link anyway-you can still win tickets thanks to sponsors Smirnoff- Superheroes and vodka. Might even make up for the idiotic lack of giant calamari at the end. Oh-and if you’re one of those psuedohip types desperately trying to finish the book on your way to work each morning:spoiler alert.
As well as writing about doom laden portents of the coming apocalypse, robots and things you can do on Google Maps, we at Electric Spectre like nothing better than a good cold beer. Something that can only be improved upon by the addition of perhaps the greatest science exhibits in the world. Well, look no further that the Science Museum Lates. In which The Science Museum opens its doors til late, bans children and serves us a variety of alcoholic beverages. Quite brilliant, I assure you – I was there last night and had an ace time. There are even shows and talks. (I saw an antique dildo and was shouted at by a man for shoving a straw through a potato)
They’re having another one on 18th March. Get yo’ asses there!
Continuing our tradition of reporting on google map addons, here’s a nicely complimentary feature for the Disaster Mapper- Ground Zero. Basically pick your weapon- I am going with ‘Planet Cracker’, because screw you planet Earth- and GZ will generate you a nice little iconised map showing the effects of destruction and radiation poisoning. This obviously won’t work after an EMP hits you, but it is perfect for planning that tactical strike on Milton Keynes, or just knowing which way to run when the oil starts running out next year.
I apologise in advance for the lack of a good picture to accompany this story. The guys over at Weta (the SFX company responsible for Lord of the Rings, King Kong and Narnia) have gone completely beyong their remit and, wait for it, created a mermaid’s tail for a double amputee in New Zealand.
Again, I’m sorry there is not as yet an awesome picture of this, our paparazzi boys are on it.
The woman in question, Nadya Vessey, lost her legs due to illness when she was a child. Then one day
a child asked her what happened to her legs and she told him she was a mermaid. The idea stuck with her, so she wrote to Weta Workshop in Wellington, New Zealand, two years ago asking for a mermaid tail. To her surprise, they said they’d do it.
Are all SFX people this philanthropic? Because I am thinking setting myself alight and calling Rob Bottin in to fix me up. Rob Bottin. He designed RoboCop, which gives me an excellent excuse for posting a picture of RoboCop.
Tired of the world’s military following you with autonomous drones? Show ‘em how you feel with…Shotgun Copter! The first invention this year to make me sit up, shout ‘Urrrrgggh!!!’ and head off to find a rooftop overlooking Oxford Street.
